Major Accomplishments 2009

Among our successes in 2009, CCEJ:

succeeded in having a contaminated soil staging area removed from the vicinity of a community center near Windsor Street in Hartford, CT

negotiated installation of diesel fume reduction devices to ten Hartford, CT garbage trucks, which now run 90% cleaner than previously

through our EPA funded “Get Hartford Recycling” project, participants in the city’s single stream recycling program have doubled the amount of material they recycle in 2009 compared to the baseline period in 2008.

worked with our partner Coalition for a Safe & Healthy Connecticut to pass a new state law banning BPA in food containers and certain children's products, effective 2011. BPA is known to produce reproductive and neurological damage in young children and women of child-bearing age.

helped convince the Bridgeport Zoning Commission to ban residences in industrial areas of their city and industry from residential areas.

helped pass a Connecticut state law requiring green cleaning in all public schools

helped pass new law requiring higher refunds for water bottle returns.

Quite a list, but we anticipate even more accomplishments before year's end.
