Sample Letters to Oppose Hazardous Waste Transfer Facility

You can use parts of different sample letters in writing a letter to the City Planning and Zoning Commission, but please do not copy any one letter word for word. Put things in your own words as much as possible. Please put your name and contact information on your letter.

Sample letter 1

As a resident ( or business person) in the City of Hartford I would like to express my opposition to the siting of a Hazardous Waste Transfer Facility by Heritage- Crystal Clean at 94 Murphy Road. I am concerned about the potential for an accident or fire that could result in the release of hazardous waste , thus risking the health of people residing and doing business in  Hartford. I am also concerned about the fact that Hartford is currently carrying an unfair burden of the region’s waste facilities. Please take a leadership role in opposing the siting of this facility in Hartford.

Sample letter 2

I am outraged that Heritage- Crystal Clean is attempting to place a Hazardous Waste Transfer Facility at 94 Murphy Road. Hartford is currently handling between 400 and 600 trucks of waste per day. That is enough. We should not have to carry an additional burden of waste.  As a residents ( or business person) in the Hartford I am concerned about the health effects of being in daily proximity to this amount of waste that is being transported, stored and incinerated. I am concerned that additional hazardous waste in Hartford will create an additional health burden for my family, my neighbors and myself.

Sample letter 3

I urge you to pass an amendment to the zoning codes to prevent Hazardous Waste facilities from moving into Hartford. This will bar companies like Heritage-Crystal Clean from siting a Hazardous Waste Transfer Facility in Hartford and give recognition to the health burden carried by Hartford residents and South Meadow businesses in being in proximity to so many waste facilities. It will also give recognition to the increased burden on Hartford firefighters and other front line workers who will be charged with dealing with the release of hazardous waste in case of fire or accident, if Hazardous Waste Facilities are allowed to move into Hartford.
