Welcome to the home page for CCEJ's Fairfield County chapter! Below we have outlined our major initiatives in Bridgeport and the Fairfield County area.

CARE: Assessing Environmental Health Risks in Bridgeport. In 2007, CCEJ embarked on a project to identify the biggest problem tied to environment and health in Bridgeport. We worked together with city officials, businesses, and nonprofits; did some GIS mapping; and came up with a very clear conclusion.

Push for Recycling in Bridgeport. In 2008-9, Bridgeport's recycling rate was only about 11%, much lower than for most communities in Connecticut. CCEJ was concerned because recycling helps cut trash incineration, a major air pollution issue for the city. We decided to make a concerted push to educate city residents and bring about meaningful change in the numbers.

Battling Polluters near Residences. Bridgeport has a history of allowing industry to operate in the same parts of the city as where residents live. The result: residents face high exposures to air and noise pollution that can impact health. CCEJ and our partners in Bridgeport CARE have taken a stand against polluters that are part of the problem.

Fighting Asthma in the Home. Too many families in Bridgeport live unnecessarily with asthma and lead poisoning. Through our Healthy Homes program, CCEJ has partnered with the city of Bridgeport to help relieve this problem in one of the most common places it starts: the family home.
